Now why didn't I think of the notes? Between this and Peggy's earlier suggestion, I should now be able to do what I want.

Remember that the notes field must be added at the end of a regular appointment or you will get the 'all day' flag. You can still edit your 'all day' thingy, I think by using the block commands.
