The files you transfer do not have to be limited to ASCII text or plain braille (i.e. 7-bit), though they probably ought to be. If they are text, it might be an idea to set the parity to either odd or even and have the parameters match at both ends. There is also the possibility that your serial port cannot reliably transfer at 38400 baud, though this is probably rare.
