I am having the same problem (both with google.co.uk and google.com), but
I'm 99% sure that it worked when I initially installed KeySoft 6.1. I know
I'm getting old and my memory might not be what it was, but ...
Other edit boxes work fine. Has anyone duplicated this?

box looks like hmmmmm, a box with square brackets on either side. The
text must be entered between those brackets.
Second, do not hit the enter key after entering text in the box,
rather move to the search button and press enter on that. That may do
the trick. Perhaps other folks have better advice.
