It's up to the manufacturers of the screen readers to write the drivers for speech synthesizers and/or Braille displays. That's why Jaws doesn't allow the BN/VN to be used as a speech synth under XP, because no driver was written. There are those out there who claim this is because the two products--Jaws and the BrailleNote family--are produced by competitors. I would guess there are other reasons, but since I don't work for either company, I don't know.
