Just to set everyone straight on what an executable file is, first of all,
it is a file with the file type of dot E X E. Some EXE files are
self-extracting, some must be extracted, and some need no extraction
whatsoever. However, they all share the common characteristic of being able
to make the computer do something. Some times, most of the time, we hope,
that EXE file will do what we want and expect it to do. If not, why would
we have downloaded it or installed it in the first place? Some EXE files,
however, can creat chaos inside our computers, such as erase our entire
database, send our address list out to someone we do not know, and many
other nasty things. If you are thinking about downloading and installing an
EXE file, best to know that it is from a reliable source, and best to know
what it is going to do once it gets into your computer.

For the most part, an executable file is a program that is self extracting.
In other words, if you download such a file, all you need to do to open the
program is press enter on it and its contents will be extracted. As far as
I know, Braille Note DOES NOT currently support THIRD-PARTY executables. So,
if I write a program, and you choose to download it from a website as an
example, YOU CANNOT INSTALL this program on your BrailleNote because
BrailleNote only supports executables written by its developers and
manufacturers.
MP3 files are audio sounds. There are many different types of bit rates
associated with this type of file. The BrailleNote, unlike your computer,
DOES NOT support ALL BIT RATES out there; as such, if ou download an MP3
file into your BrailleNote, it MAY NOT play. Although I HAVE NOT upgraded
to Version 6.1, I DO NOT believe that you can a .WAV file on the
BrailleNote, other experts will help correct this assertion.
.TXT (extension for text files), .BRF or .BRL (extensions for Braille files)
WILL DO WELL with the BrailleNote.
If you are planning on downloading many files off of the Internet, be aware
that the BrailleNote HAS LIMITED STORAGE SPACE which can fill up in no time.
I do need the storage space you have for installing and running any and all
patches from Pulsedata-HumanWare from time to time. For this reason,
DOWNLOADING YOUR FILES to a CompactFlash Card or a MICRO DRIVE is the best
option. If you have a COMPUTER, you can also download your files into your
computer and then move or copy the file to a folder on your CompactFlash
Card or Micro Drive for use with your BrailleNote. This may even be the
fastest option.
