Hi Olusegun
I have to say, you appear to be one very lucky individual. Not only are you
able to shell out all those extra bucks, you got a standard charger, and
everything is still fine. Some other people on the list, as I'm sure you have
seen, have suffered terrible consequences from doing what you did.
I didn't realize any of the manufacturers of notetakers for the blind
considered their batteries to be out of this world or second to none, I just
thought they were quite proprietary and difficult to obtain. I was aware that
the FS notetakers have batteries that are available from battery supply places,
I see no problem with getting a battery for as little money and time as
possible. It's just that I have heard all these horror stories about people
trying standard batteries and chargers with their BN's, and I decided early on
that I would never put my own unit in that kind of danger. Ah well, as my Dad
likes to say, "If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much
room."
Imho, $32 for a special charger, including shipping, is more than worth the
peace of mind I will get in knowing my BN will continue to function
hassle-free, even years down the road. Saving $16 just isn't worth the worry,
but again, that's just my opinion.
I'm so used to blindness technology being expensive and proprietary, I don't
cry about it anymore, I just grit my teeth and shell out the bucks and time
when I can and suffer when I can't. (Grin!)
May your good luck last forever!

Sarah

Hi Sarah:

Actually, I did not wish to purchase a power supply charger from Radio Shack
originally. However, I COULD NOT CONCEIVE paying $27 plus $5 shipping for
it. Sounds like just a few dimes, but, when I took it to Radio Shack, the
folks over there were able to FIND A POWER SUPPLY CHARGER that works. I had
a chance to TEST IT right there in the store, and, believe it or not, it
continues to work like a charm!!

As for batteries, I do TRUST THE FOLKS at Batteries Plus!! If they can't do
it, they'll tell me right off the bet.

Blazie Engineering (or is it now Freedom Scientific) will also have you
believe that their kind of batteries are SECOND TO NON and out of this
world; alas, Batteries Plus CHANGED THE BRAILE LITE 40 BATTERIES for me for
about $50 and that's including all sales taxes and NO ADDITIONAL SHIPPING
CHARGE, <smile>!! I'm quite willing to let Batteries Plus EXPERIMENT with
my BrailleNote; if they get it right, voila!! If not, I'll SULK for a while
and SHELL OUT another $5000 to get a new one, <grin>!! This will be keeping
Pulsedata-Humanware for a while, <smile>!! For now, I hope this battery
never goes flat; or should it choose to go flat, I can be in California for
an assignment so I can get the equipment back same day if I'm not dreaming,
<haha>!!

Sincerely,
Olusegun
