Hay, thanks for encouraging me to try other things!!  And, although I 
couldn't get what you suggested to work for me, I was finally able to get it 
to work.  Actually, in the end, I had to hold down the power button for 
maybe a second and a half, and then press the dot two or three or whatever, 
while still holding down that power button.

Now, grin, any idea about what I am doing wrong with the planner--meaning, 
why I can get the alarm to sound, but am not able to review/revise my 
appointments?

Hi, The manual is not quite clear  with regards to alternate start up. Try
this. Press and release the power button and immediately hold down dots 2 or
3 or 2-3 for the desired mode. It should work.
