Hi Terri: I can't be of much help here, but the extension .pwd stands for pocket word, and this file format is readable on the BN. I don't know about trying not to convert files to this format with activesync, but I have read .pwd files on numerous occasions without a problem on my BN.
My suggestion is to try saving this file as an earlier version of word. The BN, though "word-compatible" cannot handle XP word documents, and the unit will give you error messages such as you have reported when you try and do this. However, that only explains part of your problem. If you saved the file as a plain .txt file from the computer end, you should not be having this problem, unlesss, as someone else pointed out, all files are converted to pwd files, in which case you'd be back to an XP word document. Sorry this is only of minimal help.
