Hello Lisa,
The reason why a Braille display isn't currently replaceable is that this
would involve opening the BrailleNote, exposing the internal electronics in
the process. Now, if something wasn't assembled properly when putting the
cover, so to speak, back on the BrailleNote, the results could be quite
disastrous. The same holds true for the PK.
The reason why cleaning the Braille display yourself is not recommended by
PDI is due to the fact that whatever you're using to clean the display can
actually get into the board itself, doing further damage.
Unless we can have a look at the BrailleNote, I don't think your dot 5
problem is going to go away. Yes, I know this is frustrating Lisa but no
technology is fully protected against problems like this that tend to come
up from time to time.
If there are any comments regarding future functionality that are relevant
to this thread that need to be made, I'm sure you'll hear from Jonathan soon
enough.
Regarding messages that are acknowledged by PDI, I address messages that and
when I can but as I think I stated earlier, we are extremely busy pending
the release of KeySoft 6.1 and due to various reasons, people have been away
from the office over the last week, meaning that the work load was
temporarily redistributed. Things should be slightly better in the response
department this week, remembering however that we'll still be working to
ensure that KeySoft 6.1 starts shipping as early as possible.

Hi Bob,
Thanks for your sympathy. I hope someone from PDI does respond. The dot
5 is working again. Weird huh? Enough to drive a person crazy. I feel
like I'm gamfling with my Braille display like I'm surprised when it
works. Have a good weekend.
Lisa

Sure, Lisa; like the warning on a pack of cigarettes: "WARNING: BRAILLE
DISPLAYS MAY BE HAZARDOUS TO YOUR MENTAL STABILITY!!!"
Seriously, Braille dispays are wonderful, but they're a pain. It's the
old story, that, the more moving parts you have, the more things can
break. That's why I try to move as little as possible. hahaha Your
frustration is justified. Actually, it really should be possible for
consumers to easily clean a display, without having to send it back for
cleaning. That's what's really needed. You shouldn't worry about
creating a bad impression with your students. They need to learn that,
with any technology, things just happen. They can understand that, if a
Braille display isn't working right, that's no reflection on you.
Well, I sure hope you can rectify this situation in some way. Bob and
Maxy-wax
