Hello everyone,

I just read a message on this list where it was suggested doing away with
the parallel and/or serial ports. For me personally, this would be a very
bad idea!! I use the parallel port almost every day at school because I
write up homework assignments or tests on the BrailleNote, then I hook my BN
into the school's HP Laser printer and print out my work. This is a network
printer and by using the parallel port, I don't have to unplug any cords or
cables from the printer which might inconvenience those who need to print to
the printer via a network. I also sometimes use the flash card slot when my
professors give me tests to complete and then I print them out that way
also using the parallel port. I also use the parallel port with my Braille
printer, as well as using it for a Braille display. The serial port has
allowed me to hook up the BrailleNote and use the Braille display to install
Linux on my own without any sighted assistance, there is a program called
Brltty which is a Braille application for Linux that works with the
BrailleNote which allows me to install Linux independently. Please, let's
talk about adding to the existing hardware, and not removing useful things
that people still use. I plan on obtaining a PCMCIA network card as well as
wireless cards which will use the existing hardware, and many printers I
work with use the infrared port. I hope that Humanware considers all of
these uses, and many others, before hardware is removed from the BN.

Thanks for listening,

Beth

Hi, Kelly and List!

Actually, what about placing two usb ports where the parallel port is? If we
could run usb printers, then the parallel port would be obsolete to the
point of vanishing. I wonder what it would take to do this? Honathan, can
you give us an idea?
