I have a set of used Welbilt machines. The first of them were bought new
and have lasted 15 years. The rest were bought used, because on family
vacations we make 11 loaves a day. The machines are not versatile- they
have their programs and timers that run their course and are not alterable.
Thus you have to adapt recipes to the machine and not vice versa.
I also have a couple of Hitachi machines that work in much the same way.

If you are preparing a gift the key thing to think about is what the
recipient will do with it and how they will use it. If they want to make
simple breads most of the preprogrammed machines will do fine, and they are
simple to use. If they are more ambitious then a more adaptable, harder to
use, and usually more expensive machine will suit them. A halfway step is
to get a machine with a dough cycle, a whole wheat cycle, a basic cycle,
and a rapid cycle.
With the dough cycle many kinds of breads can be made and finished.

A useful supplement would be a set of scales ($10 at Aldi) and a good
bread/baking book. King Arthur flour has one, Rose Beranbaum has one, and
there are others. You will know best what appeals to your friend.
Good luck- the only bad bread machine is one stuck in a closet until it
goes to Goodwill.
