Having an industrial revolution before anyone else helped the British to dominate the world, of course. (I think it's fair to say that although the developed world might be dominated by the United States, it's still largely a British invention.) > During the Cold War the most dangerous job was seen as flying Tornado > bombers. Only Brits volunteered. This is not true. The Tornado was a joint project of Britain, Germany and Italy and is in service with all of their airforces. The RAF also fly the Tornado F.3, a fighter variant (it doesn't have any "proper" fighters). You may be thinking of the RAF's role in the Gulf War, in which Tornado pilots flew some of the most dangerous missions, particularly attacks on airfields.
