A space design team will unveil blueprints for the world's first
interstellar spacecraft today (Oct. 14) at a space conference in Houston.
The privately-run Team Encounter will demonstrate solar sail technology
which its president, Charles Chafer, says will allow a starship to be
launched into space as early as 2004.

A special Mylar sail will allow the ship to travel seven miles per second
thanks to pressure created by the sun's solar radiation.

Once launched, the ship will carry DNA samples, photographs and written
messages beyond Earth's solar system in hopes it will be seen by intelligent
life forms.

But don't start envisioning "Star Trek" style missions just yet.

Chafer says the ship will only be the size of a breadbox with the sail the
size a football field.
