Actually, if I could *pick* the sorts of ads I were being subjected to,
I wouldn't mind very much. It's just extremely annoying to have to wait
for the ad to load before the rest of the page does, and leave me
staring for a bit at something I really, really don't want to click
through to. If there were some sort of smart system that I could enter
preferences into, such that I got ads that I were more likely to be
interested in, I'd take advantage of it.

The closest thing I've had to that is with Weatherbug; they let you pick
your sponsor. And even then, when they started with that, I found a
sponsor I was happy having ads pop up for (insofar as I'm happy about
ads popping up), but then that contract expired, and I was left with,
well, as far as I was concerned, junk to pick from. So I picked the
least offensive, but I'm still not entirely happy.

If someone were to create a system whereby you could select criteria for
ads to be loaded on your computer, I bet that would only help the
sponsors and create something closer to a win-win situation for
everyone. (I mean, please, a pop-up ad for Viagra? That's the last
thing I need. Pop-up ad for Sports Illustrated isn't so bad, just
annoying, and I'm not likely to subscribe until I no longer have kids in
diapers; and speaking of kids in diapers, if I only got ads for
baby/child things for awhile, I'd be *really* happy. OK, those and DVD
releases.)
