We had a cat that loved to climb the Christmas tree. The vet happened to
mention that cats don't like aluminum foil and that we should lay a
strips) of foil around the tree for a few days to discourage the cat. We
put some foil around the tree and the cat simply leapt over it and
proceeded to climb the tree anyway. So we used a WIDER piece of foil on
the ground. Sure enough, the cat walked up to it, put his paw on it and
shook the paw in distaste. We felt like we had won this round.

The next day, when we came home from work, we found the foil had been
wadded up, batted around and shredded, and the cat was asleep about
2/3's of the way up the tree.

We then resorted to the spray bottle. That was 100 times more effective,
and less stressful on our nerves.
