Frankly, that disaster can be placed FIRMLY at the feet of (among 
many other mistakes) Golder Meyr. When there is a warning of war 
soon, you do NOT authorise extra troops to go home for Yom Kippur!

However, what turned the conflict was by my reading the heroic 
acitons of the Isralie tankers, who managed despite high casualties 
(and no infantry support) to push back the enemy. (and modern Isralie 
tank doctrine and equipment has techniques for unsupported advances, 
including ways to prevent getting killed by the kind of older anti-
tank missiles the Arab States *mainly* have.
