Hasn't The Guardian been questioned before for its accuracy?
It isn't nicknamed 'The Grauniad' for nothing :) But actually fabricating interviews is way beyond any 'inaccuracy' I've heard of.
This story really sounded sensationalist to me. I'd reccommend reading the rest (like how the pilot is supposed to spot a 12yo boy nearby when overflying at 400mph???). I'd personally question if the writer/paper had a bias with this...
They are a left-wing broadsheet.
From a right-wing broadsheet:
http://www.news.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2003/03/31/ nfire31.xml
"Nursing shrapnel wounds and burns on RFA Argus, the three injured soldiers, Lieutenant Alex MacEwen, 25, Lance Corporal of Horse Steven Gerrard, 33, and Trooper Chris Finney, 18, spoke of their bewilderment and anger that the American pilot apparently failed to recognise markings on their tanks declaring them coalition machines.
Despite flying very low over their heads as they patrolled through the marshes near the meeting of the Euphrates and Shatt al Arab rivers, the soldiers said the US pilot did not recognise that their tanks were a British make.
The pilot also failed to spot special coalition identification aids and even a large Union Jack on another machine in the five-vehicle convoy.
"All this kit has been provided by the Americans. They've said if you put this kit on you won't get shot," said L/Cpl Gerrard from his hospital bed. "We can identify a friendly vehicle from 1,500 metres.
"You've got an A10 with advanced technology and he can't use a thermal sight to identify whether a tank is a friend or foe. It's ridiculous.
"Combat is what I've been trained for. I can command my vehicle. I can keep it from being attacked.
"What I have not been trained to do is look over my shoulder to see whether an American is shooting at me.""
