Wow, wouldn't that be fantastic! Most jobs here in Aus with a fixed salary are impossible to finish early. In fact there is an inordinate amount of (unpaid) overtime worked by many so that set tasks can be completed. There is a lot of talk about the need to balance work and leisure time, but the sad reality for many is that long hours are expected by most employers.

I guess it is the combination between the (IMHO extreme) overqualification and a promise of time off that does the trick. I mean if you are already hanging on by a thread to get things done in time, that usually leaves no room for improvements. You'd need all the energy you've got to muddle through.

But to be fair I must say though that although getting time off for working faster than expected/average initially is a great motivation to make you find innovative ways to get things done more economically, and makes one become very self reliant, it is also extremely stressfull and tiring in the long run because demand usually also adjusts and can become rather unrealistic at times. You could say that it is only a matter of time before demand outruns planning, skill, problem solving and time-saving abillities. Leaving one totally exhausted and in utter chaos. ;o)
