Good question, but my guess would be: - unknown landing conditions - ice crevasses, avalanche, etc. - archaeologists probably don't have the training for high altitude jumps. - equipment delivery - training the low paid, and over worked guides to parachute - unpredictable wind currents on a mountain/glacier but most of all..... extraction after the dig is complete. It seems to me that I read or heard somewhere that there are problems with helicopter rescues at high altitudes on mountain sides? Depending on the altitude, that would make extraction problematic. But it seems to me that some sore of VTOL aircraft could be used for reconnaissance purposes.
