My amusement at the fact that Erik and _Jonah Goldberg_ of National Review had exactly the same response to this article - I think you guys actually used the same words - is immense. > > There truly is no better reason for voting for > George Bush than that > > it would apall people like this. > > Why is it worth your time or your vote to "apall" > such pathetic > creatures as these? But in the more general sense - i.e. that quite a few people who seem to wish ill to the United States are strongly opposed to the re-election of George Bush and would be harmed if he were re-elected, that _should_ guide my vote. If the enemies of the United States wanted President Bush re-elected (for example) that would suggest that Senator Kerry is a good person to support. And vice versa. The Grauniad (which famously published a column soon after 9/11 saying it's okay to still hate Americans, and which does seem to continually attempt to point out the complete speciousness of the argument that the world was filled with friends of ours until President Bush was elected) is, I think, a prominent voice (and we shouldn't under-estimate its importance - the Guardian is the most important newspaper of the British Left, period. It probably closely approximates the view of the median BBC employee, for example) of those in the left, particularly the European left, who genuinely do wish the US ill, and the fact that they oppose the President _does_ make me more likely to vote for him. ===== Gautam Mukunda [EMAIL PROTECTED] "Freedom is not free" http://www.mukunda.blogspot.com _______________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
