That's the way its been for a while. Star Trek stopped being about SF and started being a character driven franchise a long time ago. That's why Kirk had to have a "noble" death...can't get by with a cheap death in his bed of old age (like most ranking officers), but by saving the universe.

His "cheap death" comes in the form of his poetry.
