About 74% of the eligible voters in the Union states voted in the '64
election.

The vote totals and 1860 population by state (in thousands) is:

California 106 380
Connecticut 87 460
Delaware 17 110
Illinois 348 1712
Indiana 280 1350
Iowa 133 675
Kansas 21 107
Kentucky 92 930
Maine 115 628
Maryland 73 600
Massachusetts 175 1231
Michigan 165 749
Minnesota 42 172
Missouri 104 1067
Nevada 16 7
New Hampshire 70 326
New Jersey 129 672
New York 731 3881
Ohio 471 2340
Oregon 18 52
Pennsylvania 574 2906
Rhode Island 23 175
Vermont 56 315
West Virginia 35 NA
Wisconsin 149 776

Remembering that woman can't vote, we see that about 36% of the males
voted....so only half of the males were eligible to vote....which reflects
the average age as well as the % that couldn't vote for other reasons. The
borderline states of Missouri, Kentucky and Maryland voted at about half
the overall rate. But, that still would be almost a 40% turnout.

Nevada is clearly an anomaly...but I'm not going to spend a lot of time on
it. :-)

Hope this helps.
