There are times when sharing hobbies creates a shudder elsewhere in
the household. I started teaching my eight-year-old son how to play
Magic:the Gathering about a year ago, and he's taken to it with the
kind of enthusiasm you'd expect from a boy his age. My wife, while
she loves that we share a hobby, looks at the piles and piles of cards
and just shakes her head. And of course it's not so easy on me, as I
have to share my cards now. :-)

On the other hand, he also loves baseball, so at least he gets
outside sometimes. The only downside? He wants to learn to pitch,
which involves me spending an inordinate amount of time squatting.
As much as his love of the game is infectious, as much as I actually
*was* a catcher and pitcher in Little League, and therefore am at
least moderately qualified to instruct him, there are days the
prospect of sitting on my haunches for a half hour or more in the hot
sun simply has little appeal. Go fig. :)
