It all depends on the kid, I guess. I grabbed the 9th edition Core
Set starter box, which gives you two decks to play with and two
booklets detailing the first seven turns for each player. It was
a good way to get my son started, and he only was seven at the time.
OTOH, he loves to read, so it was a bit kind easier with him. If
he maintains his interest in it, I think he could wind up being quite
good; he grasps the timing concepts and card interactions reasonably
well, considering his age. He likes it so much that he's made me
teach a number of his friends the basics as well.

I play with my daughter also, but only Two-Headed Giant, generally.
She's kind of timid, and she doesn't yet have the confidence to fly
solo, whereas my son asks me incessantly about where the next JSS is,
when we can play, etc. The Two-Headed Giant format is a good
teaching tool. I took my daughter to this weekends' Coldsnap pre-
release tournament, and while we didn't do as well as we'd like
(having to face at least one team with one of the top twenty players
in the US), it was a nice bonding thing.
