What do you mean? I'm an "independent voter" and didn't have to "give up my franchise" (whatever that means). I have never been a member of any political party (and will not unless I find one which I at least mostly agree with, though I have been invited to join more than once) and I have voted in every election since I turned 18 except for a handful (IOW, could be counted on the fingers of one hand) when something like having had to move too close to the election time to re-register or illness which made it impossible to get to the polling place that day prevented me.
