One of my favorite bloggers, software developer Dan Shafer, expresses my pleasure with the SCOTUS's decision to deny Shrub the right to throw people in prison on a whim and leave 'em there without /some/ due process...

I sit here joyfully stunned at yesterday's rulings by the U.S. Supreme Court. By solid majorities, these justices -- whom I had despaired of ever seeing produce an even-handed ruling again -- slapped down the Bush Regime's attempt to turn my country into a Fascist Police State. The court ruled that even though he's commander-in-chief and even though he's defined us as being on a war footing without a Congressional declaration of war, Bush cannot willy-nilly arrest people, toss them into a dark hole, and throw away the key.

Solid majorities of 6-3 and 8-1 ruled in favor of the Constitution and against the usurper in the White House. Sandra Day O'Connor -- one of my least favorite justices in memory -- wrote, "We have long since made clear that a state of war is not a blank check for the President when it comes to the rights of the Nation's citizens."

I find myself breathing a bit more freely this morning, a little less discouraged, a little less disgusted at what my country has been careening towards becoming.

Thank you, Supremes!
