Dear Anna and all
You are very right about student male attitudes. I run the club here in Oxford, and this debate keeps on coming around. Last year half the team essentially didn't want women playing on the first team just because. I convinced them to allow the women to play but then we ended up with the situation of our coaches not letting the women play in the most important games/points. What I'm trying to do this year is to be as inclusive as I possibly can, helped by a couple of very talented female players, and we've got a good number of female beginners. Now we have enough players for a small indoors womens team, I'm pushing to organise women's matches against local opposition eg Mythago. This should help the confidence of the new players, create a bit of team spirit and be a big bonus when it comes to playing with the boys in the tournaments. Fingers crossed!
