All,
Thankyou for attending Bristol Tour 1. No doubt you are all cursing the 8am
start on Sunday the same as me, and offering thanks for the glorious sunshine
on Saturday and the lack of wind and rain on Sunday! Makes you wonder whether
it really was Bristol!
This was the single largest UK domestic tournament ever... and I think we have
surpassed this venues team limit! I hope the loss of the two pitches and the
tight schedule did not dull the pleasure for you all.
Anyway, onto results. For the first time ever we saw Clapham 1 finish outside
the top 4 and for the first time since Clapham stopped splitting the teams
evenly we saw the 2nd team come higher! But it wasn't all about Clapham. Fire 1
got knocked out of the top 6 in the first round by Clapham 2 only to play
Clapham 1 in the quarters to deny them a spot in the top 4. BAF nearly caused
an upset against the eventual winners, leading LeedsLeedsLeeds until the very
end when they won through to snatch the victory. Leeds and Chevron provided a
highly entertaining final while Fire continued there revenge in the 3rd vs. 4th
playoff. Fire 2 took the plate avenging their initial defeat by Brighton, who
managed to cause a 3 way tie that saw Bristol sneak into the top 8.
The B Tour saw intense competition with Paddy Murphy's small squad entertaining
all with their spirit and grit, only to be knocked out in the semis in sudden
death by the eventual champions. Last years B Tour 1 winners beat UTB1 in the
semi, making an all West Country final with Bristol Plastic Factory coming out
on top. Brighton 2 had a noticeable finish, climbing from last seeds to take
the plate. Interestingly, after much discussion about seedings the top 6 teams
remained the top 6 teams and the teams hotly tipped to win, simply didn't.
The Women's Tour 1 was the largest women's event ever in the UK, and to say the
competition at the top was intense would be an understatement. Leeds got an
early upset, beating Nice Bristols first game on Saturday which set the two
semis up to be thrillers. Swift took Bristol to sudden death in the quarter,
but then fell away in the rest of there games after giving so much. Iceni
mastered Leeds in the one semi and Bliss mastered Bristol in the other leaving
the London rivals to battle out the final. Bliss came out on top and Bristol
avenged their earlier loss against Leeds. Meanwhile a jubilant Cardiff won the
Plate.
