BD,
I love a good trawl through the JC vs JP email fest, and there's been some
excellent points made.
Here's my take on the situation.
PROBLEMS
Imbalance between tour A and tour B/Women's pitch time (Value for money)
Back to back games very unpopular
Six 2 hour hardcore games in a weekend make you vulnerable to a huge range
of injuries (it just ain't good for you)
Pretty sure to have a meaningless/repeat game or two.
SOLUTION
Tour A changes to a straight top16 knock out.
Two games a day, 90 mins + cap per game
Guaranteed 2 hour break between games
ADVANTAGES
Time for the body to rest and recover between games
Less potential for injuries
Much closer to what happens at big tournaments
Less pressure for pitch time not so much needed
Much more intense focused games
A tour get roughly the same pitch time as B tour/women's.
Every game matters
Guaranteed to play 4 different teams
DISADVANTAGES (Yep I'll acknowledge there are some)
Lesser players in big squads might not get much pitch time at all
Some drubbings in the first two rounds (Although I'd argue that in a year's
time they will be fewer as the tour A standard gets ever higher)
Nationals format would no longer be unique to Nationals
CONCLUSION
I'm sure this idea will not meet with universal approval, it has been mooted
before and dismissed, however it does solve many of the problems that have
been discussed in the last 48 hours. I'd welcome any constructive comments
or well argued rejections.
Thanks for listening
