Just a quick word about Ultimate being featured on BBC's Sportsround tomorrow.

Quick warning about the cheesy bits. Their target audience is really 10 year
olds, so the producer felt she had to include all the usual clichés like the
apple pie, disc glued to camera doing a fly by of players failing to catch
the disc (I really hope they edit that bit out), naff bit to show spirit of the
game and lack of referees, etc. I'm sure Sam will come across well, but not too
sure about some of the others that had to stage stuff. I'm sure it
will be good, but hopefully there is no such thing as bad publicity (apart from
embarrassing performances on 'You Bet'). Lots of Lookfly shirts on display
which is good.

I didn't get to see much of the filming as we had 7 PE Development officers
from neighbouring schools in to see Ultimate being demonstrated (we had 6th
form one side of the hall showing quality ultimate to the PE teachers, and 12
year olds on the other being filmed and showing slightly less quality Ultimate,
God I hope they edit it well). What was great to hear from these very
enthusiastic teachers were comments like...

"I notice they can take more than 2 steps after catching the disc. God I wish
netball would adopt that rule so we could save some knee joints"

"This sport really does seem to teach sportsmanship whereas we're stuck with
this football culture of teaching gamesmanship"

"This really does seem to encompass the Government's view on Citizenship"

"If we paid you £20 an hour, can we hire you to coach at our school?"

Tempting as it is to quit teaching and go and get paid coaching at 7 different
schools, it does highlight a recurring theme we've encountered on the junior
ultimate committee. We have numerous requests for experienced players to go
into schools and coach. They don't seem to have a problem with players not
being trained coaches since so many have run training sessions with their
University or Open teams (some actually prefer to have people with good playing
experience rather than paper coaching qualifications).

If you would be willing to give up some time (and probably earn £15-£20 an
hour) to help develop the next generation of Ultimate players, then please send
me an email. We especially need players close to Romsey (Hampshire) and Mitcham
(South London) for some holiday playschemes and fundays. Check out the
interactive map at http://www.ukultimate.com/wmslib/Juniors/junior_map.html to
see if you live around the corner from an existing junior team that could
benefit from some encouragement and expertise.

Kev.
