I may be wrong but could it possibly be that metal "cleats" are not allowed boots such as those used for baseball tend to have metal blades that can be rather sharp (I do believe baseball players wear special protection around their ankles for when playes slide onto base).
As far as traditional "studs" go, i find that being trodden on with rugby boots hurts far more than football boots (with studs) because of the length of the actual studs and not because of they are metal or plastic. The answer is simple, use football boots with blades. Anyway Nick, with your boot size you don't have to worry about WL mud baths, you just float!
