Hi
Sport England are in the process of running what they call a "Themed Funding Round" called "Active Universities". The primary aim of this is to increase the number of university students that are actively involved in sport and physical activity on a regular basis - but they are also in general simply attempting to increase the amount of sport available to university students. We did our own UKU bid for this fund with the idea of setting up intra-mural ultimate leagues in 10 unis across the country, but - perhaps not surprisingly - didn't get through the first round. We were contacted by some of these universities prior to the first round because they believe Ultimate is a great sport to help them achieve their goal - and I've since met with representatives of L'boro and Warwick about their bids for the second and final round. If your Uni has got to round 2 of this process I would say its a great opportunity for you to help build a broader and larger pool of people playing Ultimate on a regular basis at your Uni. Inevitably the Sports Development team at your Uni will need your help to make it work. We all already know that Ultimate is a successful sport at University level - indeed from BUCS' point of view it has grown to the point of being a completely mainstream University sport with participation levels way above some of the more "traditional" sports. What to do next? I'd suggest that the place to start is by asking at the AU if the Uni has applied for an Active Universities grant, and if so, whether they had thought of including Ultimate - and if so, whether they would like any help from your club, or the National Governing Body. In the end, only a subset of proposals will receive money - I'm keen to make sure that whichever Unis are awarded a grant, we are ready to help make Ultimate a key piece of their plan! Hope that makes sense - if not please shout.
