I just added a bit to TODO that may not be needed, but, while browsing vls.c and bu.h, I found a reference to a book whose title was misspelled. Upon referencing the book's details (it is the first edition), I found that the third edition has had a significant update to the red-black tree implementation. Thus I added this warning in case that may be the root cause of several of the strange errors that have been noted in various places.
