You should first harden the frame buffer opening functions for
non-existent interfaces (as you already did locally in your sources).
Then I would like to see you implementing a Qt frame buffer. This
clearly goes beyond the scope of your project and I would welcome if
you stay joined after GSoC and contribute further to BRL-CAD. Perhaps
you can implement a Qt frame buffer interface with mostly dummy
functions until GSoC ends.
