Probably the only solution at this point is to have it cleaned by an expert
who is trained in handling piezoelectric cells and who knows how to clean them
safely. Apparently there is a build-up of static electricity in there which
can cause serious damage to the display if not handled carefully. Dust and
grease tend to accumulate under the cell caps, which have to be removed, the
pins then need to be taken out individually and cleaned, while taking care of
the delicate piezoelectric reeds to which they are attached. These are made of
a ceramic material which bends when 200V of electricity are applied, and
that's what raises and lowers each pin.
