You did it the right way.

You need to turn on six-dot braille for the contraction table to take effect. 
That's how you switch between contracted and computer braille.

Either remove the old table by hand or do a "make uninstall" before doing the 
"make install". Doing "make install" doesn't remove obsolete files.

Yes, it does. It actually does "make distclean", which is more thorough. That's 
only for the build tree, though. It has no impact on the installed files.
