It was a dark and stormy night - oops, not here. Never mind. You can get the highlights of the arsenic story here: Royal Commission on Arsenical Poisoning (1903) * The epidemic, as such, was due to arsenical contamination of beer at * numerous breweries through the use of brewing sugars, glucose, or * "invert" sugar manufactured by a single firm. [...] The total number * of persons who suffered [..] was certainly 6000. A total of 70 fatal * cases occurred which were attributed to poisoning by arsenig in beer. They used sulphuric acid in producing sugar, and this acid contained arsenic. The risk was well known, and de-arsenication processes were supposed to be used when making acid. Anyhow, the sugars contained up to 11 part per million of arsenic (1-12th grain per pound). > Og skulle du falde over en opskrift på en ale, der også kan bruges mod > halsbetændelse og mellemørebetændelse: Så er vi meget lydhør!!!!!!!! Un(?)fortunately, I had invested some of my hard-earned cash in the excellent brews at Ølbaren, so I could not afford to buy that volume with the penicillin story. Therefore I may have to improvise a bit. for a sore throat: Take two pints of good dark ale, and warm gently in a pot. Dissolve two dozen strepsils and half a packet of aspirin in it together with some thyme and witch hazel. Let it simmer until the colour changes, and whip in half a cup of blood from a dark goat. Stir with a rusty screw driver and spit in the pot. Coold down and carbonate. Throw that youcky mixture out, eat the remaining medicines, and drink a stiff whisky. -- Heikki Levanto LSD - Levanto Software Development <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
