I had a hemp beer at Christiania this summer. Said to come from Germany somewhere. Tasted like a fairly uninteresting pilsner with a little boring off-flavour. They claimed it had no interesting effects, and I didn't feel any. I believe that over the years the hop plants have been refined to give great taste and a perfect bitterness. Using a related but unrefined plant will possibly give some bitterness, but the taste might not be so - well - refined...
