Reading the interview with Dru, one of the main things that certification means to me as an employer came to mind.

Certification means that the candidate is not just painting their resume in your company's or department's colors du jour, that is, positioning their experience to look as though they've always been focused on exactly what you're looking for.

You can re-craft a resume in ten minutes, but to get a certification takes some real attention to the subject. It implies a degree of seriousness about it. It's just a bit of good evidence, and in hiring as with all managing, good evidence can be scarce.

The take away from this is that just having any reasonably rigorous process in place, without getting too hung up on how to get there, has a lot of value.
