It doesn't sound like you have tried living off of royalties before! 
Developers paid by the community to code software make far, FAR more
than authors of technical books.

It could take a year or longer to write a good book.  Royalties or an
advance might pay 2-4 months of expenses, maximum.  Technical authors
do not write for the money. :)
