Leaders of China and Indonesia yesterday sealed a series of economic and defence
agreements in a move which fleshed out a pledge by the two sides in April for strategic partnership.

The five pacts are on research and development in defence technology, donations to tsunami-hit regions, economic and technical cooperation,a general loan agreement of $ 100 m worth of Preferential Buyer's Credit, and Chinese -language teaching support.

President SBY met his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao for closed-door talks yesterday afternoon at the Great Hall of the People.Later, the two leaders witnessed the signing of the agrements.

According to state broadcaster CCTV,both leaders pledged to take bilateral cooperation one step further and stand together in developing their strategic partnership.

Indonesia is one of only a few countries to be offered such a partnership by China, which promised in April to increase bilateral trade from $ 14 bn to $ 20 bn in 2008.Observers say China hopes that stronger ties with Asean's most populous country will widen its political and economic clout in the region, and further isolate Taiwan.

Beijing is also hoping to have closer military ties with Jakarta, taking advantage of the current American ban on arms sales to Indonesia.CCTV quoted President Hu as saying yesterday "We appreciate Presidentt Yudhoyono's endorsing of the ' one China ' principle and the Indonesian government's containing of terrorist and separatist elements.
The government has preserved the stability and unity of the country and promoted economic growth."

In response,Dr Yudhoyono thanked Beijing for its support of Indonesia and its contribution to the peaceful and stable development of Asean. He supported Mr Hu's proposal to increase high-level diplomatic exchanges between the two sides,as well as cooperation in areas such as infrastructure-building,energy and natural resources and tourism.

Earlier yesterday,Dr Yudhoyono held talks with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao.Dr Yudhoyono said his country welcomed Chinese cooperation in Indonesian business sectors including energy,Xinhua reported.

The Indonesian President is on a four-day visit to China,a follow-up to Mr Hu : Jakarta visit in April. He has arrived in Beijing on Wednesday on his first official visit to China.Dr Yudhoyono and his 100 member delegation will also travel to Shenzhen in southern China.

Speaking to the Indonesian community in Beijing on Wednesday,he said Indonesia's economy stood to gain from better trade ties with future super power China.According to the Jakarta Post,he noted that China's current GDP is $ 1 trillion, compared to Indonesia's $ 200 bn.

"After surpassing Germany and Japan and probably the US,which had a GDP of $ 10 trillion last year,by 2050,China would become a real superpower " he said.

Indonesia specialist Aris Ananta, who is with Singaproe's Institute of South-east Asian Studies, " Indonesian can not live in isolation, and China is a rising economic power. It is a win-win partnership, and its benefits will spill over to other countries in South-east Asia,."
