"Why did Manchu girls wear 'Cunzi' shoes"

Manchu Girls lived in the Northeastern region of China, and they liked to wear
'Cunzi' shoes. Cunzi shoes were probably the original Chinese high-heeled
shoes. The differences between modern high-heel shoes and Cunzi are that the
heel was placed in the middle of the shoe, and it was usually made of wood.
There are many ashapes and thicknesses of the wooden heel—some look like a
horse's hoof, some look like bottles, and the shoes are named after these
shapes.

Why did Manchu girls like to wear this unique style of high-heeled shoe? There
is a Chinese fairytale that tells of a Manchu Emperor who was killed. His
daughter wanted to avenge her father, however there was deep water impeding her
army. She had an idea while observing a long-legged white crane. She organized
the people to make crane leg-like shoes. The army finally traversed the deep
water and reclaimed the city for her father. Ever since, Manchu girls also wear
Cunzi shoes to pick mushrooms, to prevent being bitten by snakes.

Wearing Cunzi shoes, also called 'Qi' shoes, Manchu girls not only look taller,
while walking, they make them look very graceful and elegant. Of course, there
are also shortcomings to wearing the shoes—you can't walk too fast or too long
in them.

As the Manchu dynasty progressed, they merged with the Han culture. Until the
end of the Qing Dynasty, they were only seen on the feet of imperial concubines
in the palace. Nowadays, the elegant Cunzi shoes can only be seen on stage.
