Hi,
the following observation might help you track down the error. I am not
familiar with Ghostscript at all, so please ignore if it's nonsense.
Modifying line 755 in preview.el (function preview-pdf-color-string) to
read //graphicsbeginpage{//graphicsbeginpage exec " yields (at least
black and white) preview images in the Emacs buffer.
The comment for that function says that it "will only be invoked in
cases, (...) where previously it was not expected that anything readable
turned up". Maybe the "expectation" is wrong?
