Hi, thanks for your report. The function in question is part of `bibtex.el' which in return is part of Emacs itself and not AUCTeX. I'm CC'ing bibtex maintainer asking him if he could have a look at your suggestion. If you don't receive an answer in due time, please consider reporting this issue as an Emacs bug.
