I think BibLaTeX is pretty successful as a successor to BibTeX, all people I 
work with use it instead. However I'm just one sample for this, I don't have 
any real stats for its real life usage.

But I think its only slightly different to BibTeX, so it can't hurt to add 
minor support for it such as in the patch you provided, which to me looks great.

However, maybe it is better to at some stage add the BibLaTeX macros to the 
defaults... I'm honestly not sure what the best route is, may be best to wait 
for input from the maintainer/other AUCTeX developers, I'm just a humble 
consumer unfortunately.
