Yes, it helped: it caused autom4te to produce useful error messages.

We are talking past each other. When you say "autoconf worked" you
mean
it exited with 0 and output no warnings.
Right (on the second run of it). For every try, I need to take a new
darcs copy, so I really do not have time to check configure for each
try.
When I sat "autoconf works"
then I mean the resulting configure script is useful, contains no
unexpanded macro names, _and_ autoconf did not output any warnings and
exited successfully.
Yes, that would be good, too. :-)
