But that hook is currently in AC_PROG_CC, while Nick's proposal involved having something like that in AC_PROG_CC_C_O, for which AM_PROG_CC_C_O would continue to be a thin wrapper (but automatically invoked by AC_CONFIG_COMMANDS_PRE whenever needed).
