Probably the example could be written something like this (untested):

   case $host in
     alpha*-*-*)   dither_src=alpha ;;
     powerpc*-*-*) dither_src=powerpc ;;
     *-*-*)        dither_src=generic ;;
   esac
   AC_CONFIG_LINKS([dither.c:$dither_src/dither.c]) ;;
