Maybe you're thinking of compress? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compress says a patent (now expired) was granted on it, and I seem to recall hearing somewhere that only compression (and not decompression) was patented. This was all way before my time, so consumption with salt advised. -- Jack
