I think your most promising approach is to make it a loadable builtin and offer it to users. They can build it, load it into their shell instances, and evaluate its value.
*What the command dh does:* it adds a new command called "dh" which stands for directory history. The new command is similar to history but deals exclusively with the directories that have been cd to. It creates a .bash_dirhistory file similar to history.
This sounds very similar to pushd/popd with the addition of a file to save
the stack across shell sessions.
